BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's women's tennis squad lost to Methodist, 7-2, in the championship match of the USA South Tournament Sunday afternoon.
In doubles action, Lindsey Pantele and Stefanie Leblang (CNU) defeated Jenny Smith and Tiffany Tucker 8-3 at No. 1; Kaitlin Flaherty and Leighton Bull defeated Brittany Stevens and Frannie Shivar (CNU) 8-5; and Shannon Vivian and Lauren Hulse defeated Lisa Dyke and Chandler Long (CNU) 8-2.
In singles play, the only singles match the Captains won was at No. 1 where Pantele (CNU) defeated Tucker 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Flaherty defeated Shivar (CNU) 6-3, 6-3; Smith defeated Leblang (CNU) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3; Vivian defeated Dyke 6-3, 6-4; Bull defeated Stevens 6-2, 4-6, 13-11 at No. 5; and Lindsay Davis defeated Long (CNU) 6-1, 6-1.
Pantele was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Methodist improves to 20-3 and receives the USA South's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Christopher Newport concludes the year 20-3.
