Softball Rolls Past Greensboro, 8-3, Captures USA South Tournament Title

BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad waited out a lengthy rain delay and held on to defeat Greensboro 8-3 for the USA South Tournament title Sunday.

 

It's the sixth time the Captains have captured the title and first for Head Coach Keith Parr.

 

The two teams endured a four-hour rain delay with the Captains leading in the sixth before the two teams were able to conclude the game.

 

Greensboro struck first, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly in the opening frame. The Captains roared back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on Margit Severin's two-run home run to left.

 

CNU padded its lead with two more in the third. One of its runs scored came on an error while Katie Moyers drove in the second on a sacrifice fly. The Captains scored one in the fourth and GC scratched a run across in the fifth to make the score 5-2.

 

Leading by three, the two teams entered the four-hour rain delay. Christopher Newport scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth while the Pride scored once in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

 

Janet Fairchild improved to 9-4 in the circle by tossing six innings. She allowed two runs on seven hits. Kristen Rowe closed it out for the Captains.

 

Kennedy, the tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, a steal and three runs scored. Severin finished 1-for-3 with a two driven in and a run scored. Megan Morris went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

 

Kennedy was joined on the All-Tournament team by Moyers, Severin, Fairchild and Morris.

 

Greensboro finishes the year 25-17-1 while CNU improves to 33-8-1. The Captains will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time. The complete list of teams will be announced Sunday, May 4. CNU will play at one of the eight pre-determined sites. Action begins May 8.
