John Mook was named the USA South Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Men's Tennis Captures USA South Tournament Title With 9-0 Win Over Methodist

BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad won its second conference tournament title in three years with a 9-0 win over Methodist in the USA South Tournament Championship Sunday.

 

The Captains won all three doubles matches to get off on the right foot. John Mook and Eddie Glidewell (CNU), ranked third in the Atlantic-South, defeated the region's fifth-ranked squad, Chris Fletcher and Matthew Taylor 8-3. Dusty Nelson and Lorenzo Sison (CNU) defeated Tariq Sheikh and Jarrod Bogard 8-3 at No. 2 and John and Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Rob Currier and Dylan Know 8-4.

 

Mook continued his dominant play at the top spot, defeating Fletcher for the second time in a week with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win. Glidewell (CNU) defeated Sheikh 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2; Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Taylor 6-3, 6-0; Sison (CNU) defeated Knox 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 4; Nelson (CNU) defeated Bogard 6-1, 6-0; Connor (CNU) defeated Justin Campbell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.

 

Mook was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament team with Eddie Glidewell, Jacob Braig, and Dusty Nelson. Fletcher and NC Wesleyan's Antii Saari also were named All-Tournament.

 

Christopher Newport advances to the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a team. First, second and third round matches will be played at a site to be determined with matches set for May 2-4.

 

The Monarchs conclude the year 9-9 while the Captains are now 19-3.
