Softball Sweeps A Pair At NC Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad swept a doubleheader from USA South rival NC Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.

 

The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was rained out and rescheduled for Wednesday.

 

The Captains took game one, 4-1. They were the recipients of three unearned runs with the fourth coming on a solo shot off the bat of Renee Ashworth in the sixth.

 

Kristen Nickloy went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Taylor Morgan was 2-for-4 with a run driven in. Ashworth, Lauren Rowley, Jessie Atkinson and Megan Morris each had one hit in the win.

 

Janet Fairchild tossed 6 2/3 innings to improve to 5-3 in the circle. She allowed one run on six hits, walked four and struck out five. Kristen Rowe picked up the save, striking out the only batter she faced.

 

In game two, Christopher Newport was again victorious, 4-0, as Lindsay Kelly improved to 6-1 by pitching a complete-game shutout. She gave up just two singles, walked five and struck out three.

 

Danielle Steel's RBI single in the second proved to be the only run CNU would need.

 

Nickloy was 2-for-3 with a run driven in. Katie Moyers finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Mary Kennedy was 1-for-3 with two steals. Taylor Morgan and Audra Underwood both had one hit in the win.

 

NC Wesleyan falls to 12-10 overall and 3-7 in the USA South. The Captains are now 20-7-1 on the year and 5-2-1 in conference play. Christopher Newport returns to action Saturday when they host Averett at 1 pm.
