Baseball Takes Two Games At USA South Tournament

BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's baseball squad eliminated Ferrum and Methodist on day three of the USA South Tournament and will now face NC Wesleyan in the title game.

 

The Captains will have to defeat the Bishops twice in order to receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

 

CNU defeated Ferrum, 19-7, behind the bat of Ryan McDougal who blasted two home runs and drove in a total of seven runs. He finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Chris Despins also blasted a home run and drove in seven as well. He was 3-for-4 and scored four times.

 

David Fennessey was 3-for-4 and Alex Owen went 2-for-5.

 

David Acosta went five innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, while walking just one and striking out six. He improves to 3-1 on the year. Josh Hankins tossed three perfect innings in relief.

 

Christopher Newport advanced to the final day by defeating Methodist, 8-3.

 

CNU blasted two homers but rode the arm of Kyle Baumann who tossed eight innings, allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out six.

 

Trae Bailey led the Captains offense going 3-for-5 with a home run, three driven in and two runs scored. Mike Giarrizzi went 3-for-5 with a solo home run. Owen finished 2-for-3.

 

Ferrum falls to 10-21 while Methodist is now 25-14-1. Christopher Newport, with its two wins, improves to 25-9. The Captains and NC Wesleyan will meet Sunday at 12 pm. If CNU wins, an if game will be played at 4 pm.
