Softball Advances In USA South Tournament, Drops NC Wesleyan, 5-3

BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad won its first round USA South Tournament game, 5-3, over NC Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

 

The Captains trailed 1-0 after the top of the first and scored two in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Katie Moyers and an RBI single by Margit Severin.

 

CNU pushed two more across in the bottom of the second. Kristen Nickloy blasted a two-run home run to put Christopher Newport ahead, 4-1.

 

The Bishops cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Captains scored an insurance run on Moyers' RBI single in the sixth.

 

Janet Fairchild tossed four innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits. She improved to 7-4 with the win. Lindsay Kelly tossed the final three innings for the save. She gave up just one hit and struck out four.

 

Jessie Atkinson went 2-for-3 and Nickloy also finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Megan Morris finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

 

NC Wesleyan falls to 18-18 while Christopher Newport improves to 30-8-1. The Captains will take on Methodist at 12 pm.
