Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball squad ended its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of 8th-ranked Methodist Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.
CNU took game one, 6-5.
In the first, Mary Kennedy singled with one out and promptly stole second and came around to score on Katie Moyers' single to put the Captains on top, 1-0. Jessie Atkinson put Christopher Newport ahead, 2-0, with a solo home run in the top of the second.
The Monarchs cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third, but CNU responded with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead back to two on Margit Severin's run scoring single.
Lenora Harper stole home in the fourth to put the Captains on top, 4-1. Both teams scored twice in the sixth to make the score 6-3. The Monarchs pushed across two runs in the seventh but Kristen Rowe was able to shut the door by getting the last out with two runners on base.
Kennedy finished 3-for-4 with a steal and two runs scored. Moyers and Severin both finished 2-for-3 with a run driven in. Renee Ashworth was 3-for-3 and Atkinson finished 2-for-3.
Janet Fairchild tossed six innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits to pick up her sixth win. Rowe allowed two runs on three hits to earn her fifth save.
Christopher Newport took the night-cap, 3-1.
Severin continued swinging a hot bat as she doubled in a run in the bottom of the first. In the fourth, Atkinson doubled home a run and Severin then drilled a solo shot in the fifth to put the Captains ahead, 3-0.
Methodist scored once in the top of the seventh but Rowe once again came in and was able to nail down the save, her sixth of the year.
Severin was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Lindsay Kelly went 6+ innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out two for win number eight on the year.
The Monarchs fall to 32-8 overall and 14-4 in the USA South. CNU improves to 29-8-1 and 14-3-1 in conference action. The Captains will be the No. 2 seed in this week's USA South Tournament. CNU will play the winner of No. 7 NC Wesleyan/No. 10 Mary Baldwin on Friday at 1 pm.
