FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Christopher Newport's women's tennis squad had its 17-match winning streak snapped at the hands of conference rival Methodist Saturday afternoon, falling 7-2.
The loss ends the chances of the Captains regular season title bid and will most likely be the number two seed in next week's conference tournament in Burlington, NC
CNU managed just two wins, one each in doubles and singles.
Tiffany Tucker defeated Lindsey Pantele (CNU) 6-3, 6-0 at No.1; Frannie Shivar (CNU) won the only singles match for the Captains, taking down Kaitlin Flaherty 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2, keeping her winning streak alive, which is now at 52 straight dual match singles wins.
Jenny Smith upended Stefanie Leblang (CNU) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3; Shannon Vivian defeated Lisa Dyke (CNU) 6-1, 6-1, handing Dyke her first singles loss of the spring. Leighton Bull defeated Brittany Stevens (CNU) 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 and Lindsey Davis defeated Chandler Long (CNU) 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, Tucker and Smith defeated Pantele and Leblang (CNU) 8-3; Stevens and Shivar (CNU) defeated Bull and Flaherty 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2 and Vivian and Lauren Hulse defeated Dyke and Long (CNU) 8-4.
The Monarchs, ranked 10th in the Atlantic-South, improve to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the USA South. Christopher Newport, ranked 11th in the region, falls to 17-1 on the year and 7-1 in conference play.
CNU concludes USA South play Sunday when they travel to Averett with start time set for 11 am.
