CNU's men's tennis squad captured the No. 1 seed at the USA South Tournament with a 9-0 win over Methodist.

Men's Tennis Sweeps VA Wesleyan And Methodist, Captures No. 1 Seed At USA South Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad swept VA Wesleyan and Methodist Saturday and captured the No. 1 seed at next week's USA South Tournament.

 

On Senior Day, CNU began the day by defeating cross-water rival VA Wesleyan, 9-0.

 

In singles, Lorenzo Sison (CNU) defeated Steven Wright 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1; Dusty Nelson (CNU) defeated Devin Crosby 6-1, 6-4; John Braig (CNU) defeated Tom Popomaronis 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Dylan Young (CNU) defeated Lee Cebula 6-0, 6-1; senior Kevin Repper (CNU) defeated Scott Montgomery 6-1, 6-0 and senior Tommy Harris (CNU) dispatched Jamie Griffin 6-4, 6-4.

 

In doubles action, John Mook and Eddie Glidewell (CNU) defeated Wright and Crosby 8-3; Jacob Braig and Ricky Connor (CNU) defeated Popomaronis and Cebula 8-3 at No. 2 and Harris and Repper (CNU) capped Senior Day with an 8-3 win over Montgomery and Griffin.

 

The Captains concluded the day by sweeping Methodist, 9-0. Christopher Newport is ranked fifth in the Atlantic-South while the Monarchs are the 14th-ranked squad.

 

In singles, Mook (CNU) defeated Fletcher, the region's fifth-ranked player, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. No. 12 Glidewell defeated Tariq Sheikh 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2; Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Matthew Taylor 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; Sison (CNU) defeated Dylan Knox 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4; Nelson (CNU) defeated Jarrod Bogard 7-5, 6-1; and Connor (CNU) won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, over Justin Campbell at No. 6.

In doubles, Glidewell and Mook (CNU), ranked third in the region, defeated #5 Fletcher and Taylor 9-7 at No. 1; Nelson and Sison (CNU) defeated Bogard and Sheikh 8-2; and John Braig and Connor (CNU) defeated Knox and Rob Currier 8-2 at No. 3.

Methodist falls to 7-7 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 15-3 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. With a win at Averett Sunday, CNU would capture the regular season crown out-right.
