Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's Chris Despins hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to help lead the Captains baseball squad past Averett, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.
With the win, CNU Head Coach John Harvell picked up win No. 200 for his career, becoming the first coach in program history to reach the milestone.
The Cougars cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth but CNU extended its lead back to 2, 3-1, with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. AU pushed across another single run in the top of the eighth to cut the lead back to one, but Christopher Newport pushed across three in the bottom of the inning to secure its fifth win in its last six games.
Despins finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. He was intentionally walked twice. Trae Bailey went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Eric Cole was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Mike Giarrizzi also finished with two hits.
Steven Millerleile went seven strong innings in his second straight conference start. The southpaw allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out three to improve to 1-2 on the year.
Kevin Moreland tossed the final inning and a third for his first save of the year.
Averett falls to 7-12 overall and 0-4 in conference action. The Captains improve to 9-3 on the year and 3-1 in the USA South.
