Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse squad dropped a 17-9 decision at home to Hampden-Sydney Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers struck early and often as they scored the first three goals of the game. Justin King put the Captains on the board with 5:46 left in the opening period and the Tigers responded by closing the period with the final three goals.
CNU scored the first goal of the second period but HSC responded by scoring three straight, with the third coming at the start of the second half.
HSC scored six times in the first and six more in the third and tallied five in the second and fourth periods combined. Christopher Newport, after scoring once in each of the first two periods, totaled seven scores in the second half.
Jon Ims led CNU with three goals and one assist. King and Ryan Merrell added two goals each while Patrick Cavanaugh and Chris Quigley each scored once. Matt Gleisner and Ray Fitzgerald both finished with one assist.
Hampden-Sydney out-shot the Captains, 29-28. Matt Miller made seven stops in goal for Christopher Newport.
The Tigers improve to 2-1 on the season while CNU falls to 1-3. The Captains return to action Saturday when they host Tri-State at 1 pm.
