VA BEACH, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse team had its three-match winning streak snapped Wednesday night, falling 9-6 to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan.

The Marlins quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the game. VWC increased its lead to 2-0 just seven minutes later. The Captains cut the lead in half less than a minute later. VA Wesleyan scored once more with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half to lead 3-1 and CNU scored twice in the final two minutes to tie the score at 3-3.

In the second half, VWC scored six times while limiting Christopher Newport to just three goals for the win.

Katie Doherty scored two goals and assisted on another. Shayna Sargent scored twice. Meghan Harkey finished with one goal and one assist. Kaitlin Quigley scored once and Morgan Layton had one assist.

The Captains out-shot the Marlins, 29-26. Gayle Robinson finished with 11 saves.

CNU falls to 5-2 on the year and VA Wesleyan improves to 6-3. Christopher Newport returns to action Saturday when they travel to Catholic with start time set for 1 pm.
