Softball Sweeps A Pair Of Games From Mary Washington

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team snapped its two-game losing streak Tuesday by sweeping a doubleheader from Mary Washington.

 

The Captains won game one, 4-3. CNU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Kristen Nickloy's double scored Mary Kennedy and Jessie Atkinson's single scored Katie Thompson for what proved to be the winning run. Christopher Newport led 4-2 after the fifth and the Eagles scratched across a run in the top of the sixth for the final margin.

 

Kennedy finished 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Atkinson was also 2-for-4.

 

Lindsay Kelly tossed five innings to improve to 4-1 on the year. She allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits, walked one and struck out three. Kristen Bruce pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two, for her first save.

 

CNU won the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings. Each team scored a single run in the second and the Captains bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as they scored eight times. Megan Morris tripled to start off the inning and then clubbed her team-leading seventh home run, a three-run shot, that won it for the Captains by virtue of the eight-run rule.

 

Morris finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Morgan homered to lead off the second for Christopher Newport and was 2-for-3. Kennedy went 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Katie Moyers also homered in the win for CNU.

 

Kristen Rowe tossed all five innings for Christopher Newport. She allowed one run on two hits, walked two and struck out three. She is now 2-1 on the year.

 

Mary Washington falls to 16-11. CNU improves to 15-6-1. The Captains return to action Wednesday as they host USA South foe Mary Baldwin. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
