GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse team won its first match of 2008 by defeating Guilford, 12-11, in overtime Sunday afternoon.

The game was back and forth from the very beginning. Neither team led by more than two goals. The Captains had the largest lead of two goals, which happened twice during the game.

Guilford went ahead 11-10 with 4:11 to go in regulation and Patrick Cavanaugh tied the score just 59 seconds later with Justin King assisting.

Ryan Merrell scored the game-winner with 33 seconds left in overtime. It was his fourth goal of the game. King also scored four times to go along with his assist.

Cavanaugh finished with a goal and two assists, Jon Ims added one goal and one helper while Matt Gleisner and Ray Fitzgerald each scored once.

Christopher Newport out-shot the Quakers, 45-40. Matt Miller recorded his first collegiate win by making 13 stops in goal.

The Captains are now 1-2 on the year. Guilford falls to 0-3. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they host Hampden-Sydney at 3 pm.
