SEWANEE, TN – Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad, ranked 20th in the country, defeated the 29th ranked Tigers of Sewanee, 6-3, Sunday afternoon.
It was the first win for the Captains over the Tigers in three tries. It's also the second highest ranked team CNU has defeated in program history.
In singles action, Eddie Glidewell (CNU) defeated Charlie Boyd 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. Boyd was an All-American in 2007 and won his first round match in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Max Lemaigre 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; John Mook (CNU) defeated Jeff Lepley 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3; Tanz Kaine defeated Lorenzo Sison (CNU) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Henry Litchfield defeated Ricky Connor (CNU) 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 5; and Dusty Nelson (CNU) defeated Will Holloway 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Atlantic-South's 5th-ranked squad, Glidewell and Mook (CNU) defeated the region's No. 7 Team, Boyd and David Pointer, 8-5; Lemaigre and Kaine defeated Nelson and Sison (CNU) 8-4 at No. 2; John and Jacob Braig (CNU) defeated Jay Hill and Holloway 8-2.
Christopher Newport is the region's 11th-ranked squad while Sewanee is ranked 8th. The new rankings will come out this coming week.
CNU improves to 7-1 on the year while the Tigers fall to 7-5. The Captains return to action Friday when they host USA South rival Greensboro on the CNU Courts at 1 pm.
