Softball Drops Game One To Greensboro, Second Game Called Due To Darkness

GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad let game one slip away Friday and saw game two called with a tie score due to darkness against Greensboro.

 

The Pride came from behind to win game one, 5-4. GC won it in the bottom of the seventh. CNU led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth when they allowed four runs to tie the game. Olivia MacPherson's single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Pride to the win.

 

Kristen Nickloy led the Captains, going 2-for-2 with a run driven in and a run scored. Margit Severin went 2-for-2 and scored a run. Jamie Jansen finished 2-for-4.

 

Janet Fairchild started and went 5 1/3 innings, allowed three runs on two hits, walked three and struck out three. Kristen Rowe suffered the loss in relief, throwing one inning, giving up two runs on three hits to fall to 1-1 on the year.

 

In game two, Christopher Newport led 6-1 after one inning of play but let Greensboro score three in the second to cut the lead to 6-4. The Captains pushed across two more in the top of the third but GC responded with three of its own in the bottom of the inning.

 

CNU led 8-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh but allowed the tying run to score but got the final two outs in the inning before the game was called due to darkness.

 

Mary Kennedy and Katie Moyers are 2-for-4 in game two.

 

Kristen Bruce went three innings, allowed seven runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three. Lindsay Kelly came in and tossed four innings in relief, gave up the tying run, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two.

 

Greensboro is now 9-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the USA South. The Captains are now 8-3-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in conference action. CNU returns to the diamond Saturday as they head to Ferrum, VA to take part in the Ferrum Invitational Christopher Newport will play Hunter (NY) at 12 pm and NC Wesleyan at 4 pm.
