Baseball Falls At Cross-Water Rival, VA Wesleyan, 14-6

VA BEACH, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped Wednesday by cross-water rival VA Wesleyan, 14-6.

The two teams both went scoreless the first two innings before the Captains got on the board in the top of the third but the Marlins responded with two in the bottom half of the third frame to take a 2-1 lead.

VA Wesleyan's bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth as they erupted for nine runs and then scored one more in the fifth to lead, 12-1. CNU put a five-spot on the board in the top of the sixth and the Marlins added a single run in the bottom of the inning as well as one more in the eighth.

Alex Owen went 2-for-4 with a home run. David Fennessey finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and Thomas Drewry was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Mike Giarrizzi took the loss, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

Christopher Newport falls to 10-4 on the year while VA Wesleyan is now 11-4-1. CNU returns to the diamond Friday when they host Castleton St. (VT) in a doubleheader with first pitch set for 11 am.
