Chelsie Schweers scored 26 points in CNU's comeback win

Women's Basketball Comes From 12 Down At Halftime To Defeat Shenandoah, 70-66

WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team trailed by 12 at halftime and came from behind to defeat Shenandoah, 70-66, Wednesday evening in a USA South contest.

 

CNU trailed, 33-21, at the start of the second half and came out and scored 15 of the first 19 points to cut the lead to one, 37-36, on Chelsie Schweers' three-pointer with 15:18 left.

 

The Captains took the lead for good with 10:56 left in the game on Colandra Rollins' lay-up that put Christopher Newport ahead, 47-45.

 

CNU led by as many as eight in the second stanza and the Hornets cut the lead to as few as two which came with less than a minute to go. Schweers drained two free throws in the waning seconds to secure the win for the Captains.

 

Shenandoah finished the game 24-of-56 (43%) from the field, 4-of-13 (31%) from behind the arc and 14-of-16 (88%) from the free throw line. Katherine Flint led the Hornets with 20 points. Alexis Hargbol added 18 points and eight rebounds while Whitney French scored 11 off the bench.

 

The Captains benefitted from a 49-point second half by shooting 66% from the floor, including 57% from behind the arc. CNU finished 27-of-60 (45%) from the field, 6-of-15 (40%) from long range and 10-of-14 (71%) from the free throw line.

 

CNU was paced by Colandra Rollins' 27 points and 10 rebounds. Schweers finished with 26 points.

 

The Hornets fall to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 13-4 on the year and 8-2 in conference play. The Captains return to action Saturday when they travel to Peace with tip set for 2 pm.
