NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team held off a late rally by Greensboro to take down the Pride, 86-85, Sunday afternoon in a USA South contest.
The Captains led by as many as 20 points in the first half, before leading 46-36 at the break.
In the second half, Christopher Newport's largest lead was 13, 70-57, with 10:19 left on two Jessica Carmon free throws. The Pride then went to work and slowly whittled the lead down to single digits with less than seven minutes to play.
Greensboro took its first lead since 17:15 left in the first half when Danielle Duncan's lay-up put GC on top, 82-81, with 1:54 left in the game.
On the very next CNU possession, Chelsie Schweers drove the length of the floor and drained a lay-up to give her team back the lead. The Pride responded on Ashley Burnette's bucket in the paint and was fouled and went to the line where she completed the three-point play.
Schweers was fouled and went to the line where she made one of two to cut the lead to one, 85-84, with 29 seconds to go. After a Captains foul, GC went to the line and missed both free throws and immediately fouled Schweers with 12 seconds to go. Schweers made both free throws and the Pride's attempt at the buzzer was no good.
Greensboro was 28-of-67 (42%) from the field, 7-of-23 (30%) from behind the arc and 22-of-31 (71%) from the free throw line. Danielle Duncan led the Pride with 28 points and eight rebounds. Dione Eccles added 25 points and 11 boards.
Christopher Newport was 31-of-63 (49%) from the floor, 5-of-11 (46%) from long range and 19-of-27 (70%) from the charity stripe. CNU was led by Schweers' 30 points on 10-of-18 from the field, 4-of-9 from behind the arc and 6-of-7 from the line. She becomes the first player to score 30 or more points in back-to-back games since Misty Hart did it in the 1997-98 season.
Colandra Rollins finished with 27 points and 19 rebounds, her 10th double-double of the year.
The Pride fell to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in the USA South. CNU improves to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Captains return to action Wednesday when they travel to Shenandoah to begin the second half of conference play. Tip-off is 5:30 pm.
