Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team swept a pair of games on day one of the Beach Blast Tournament Friday afternoon.
The Captains two games were moved from VA Beach to Captains Park due to inclement weather earlier in the week.
CNU defeated Rutgers-Newark, 12-4, in game one.
Christopher Newport scored once in the first, third and sixth innings. The Captains added two in the second, three in the fourth and four more in the top of the seventh.
Mary Kennedy finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Megan Morris was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and stolen bases. Taylor Patton went 2-for-3 with three steals, two runs and a run driven in.
Taylor Morgan was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Kristen Bruce picked up her first win of the year, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four.
In game two, the Captains shut out Frostburg St., 9-0, in five innings.
Katie Moyers finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kennedy went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. She also stole two bases.
Janet Fairchild earned her first win of the year, tossing three innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Lindsay Kelly combined with Fairchild to throw a five inning no hitter. Kelly went two innings, walked one and struck out two.
Christopher Newport improves to 4-0 on the year. The Captains return to action on day two of the Beach Blast Tournament Saturday afternoon.
