Women's Basketball Rolls Over Averett, 75-30

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad steamrolled its way to a 75-30 win over Averett Tuesday night in a USA South quarterfinal contest at the Freeman Center.

The 30 points allowed were the fewest since the Captains gave up just 20 to Allen (SC) in a 100-20 win back on Dec. 12, 1998, Head Coach Carolyn Hunter's first season.

CNU scored the game's first nine points and never looked back. Christopher Newport scored 21 points off of 14 Cougar turnovers. The Captains also scored more points in the paint (40), than Averett did in the entire game.

Christopher Newport led at halftime, 39-12, and led by as many as 47 in the second half.

Averett was limited to just 11-of-63 (18%) shooting from the field, 3-of-18 (17%) from behind the arc and 5-of-8 (63%) from the free throw line. Gretchen Sheperty led the Cougars with 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

The Captains shot 31-of-57 (54%) from the floor, 2-of-7 (29%) from long range and 11-of-13 (85%) from the charity stripe. Jessica Moore led CNU with 18 points. Colandra Rollins finished with her seventh straight double-double, and 18th of the year, with 12 points and 18 rebounds. Kelly White added 13 points and 11 boards while Chelsie Schweers had 12 and Michele Russell contributed 11.

The Cougars finished the season 10-16. Christopher Newport improves to 20-6 overall. It's the 10th time in the program's 36 years a team has won 20 games in a year.

CNU advances to the USA South semifinals on Friday at 6 pm at the Freeman Center where they will meet No. 3 Methodist.
