Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's softball squad began its 2008 campaign in dramatic fashion on Saturday as they swept its opening day doubleheader against Bridgewater.
The Captains won the first game in their last at-bat with a walk-off single by Danielle Steel. CNU took game one, 2-1. Meanwhile in the second game, the Captains overcame a 4-run deficit with the help of homeruns from Megan Morris and Margit Severin. The Captains won game two, 10-6.
In Game one, Janet Fairchild took a 1-0 lead into the top of the 7th, but the Eagles came up with a 2-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-all. Kristen Rowe relieved Fairchild and shut the door on the inning to give the Captains a chance in their final at-bat.
In the bottom of the 7th, Steel came to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs. Steel roped the ball over the head of the shortstop, where it fell in for a game-winning single.
Steel was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one.
In Game two, the Captains found themselves in an early 4-0 hole after just two innings.
In the bottom of the third, Severin hit a solo homerun to get the Captains on the board, but that would only be the beginning of the CNU offensive attack. In the following inning, CNU posted six runs, four off the bat of Megan Morris when she belted a grand slam.
From that point on, there was no looking back as Fairchild came on to pick up a 2-inning save. Kristen Bruce went 3.1 innings for the win while striking out two and walking one to pick up the win in relief.
The Captains had multiple players chipping in on offense as Morris finished with 5 RBI, Steel had 3 runs scored, and Jamie Jansen went 2-for-3.
The Captains are now 2-0 while the Eagles fall to 0-2.
The Captains return to the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Greensboro for a 2 pm doubleheader.
