Women's Basketball Falls 59-44 At Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad dropped its second straight contest, falling 59-44 at Greensboro Friday evening.

 

Greensboro took advantage of the Captains 24 turnovers and hit 17 of its 23 free throw attempts. Neither team shot extremely well in either half, as the Pride led 24-23 at the break.

 

The Captains led, 17-14, with 9:14 to go in the first half on Colandra Rollins' lay-up. Both teams went scoreless for the next four minutes until Danielle Duncan's two free throws put Greensboro ahead to stay with 5:34 left in the first half.

 

Christopher Newport would get as close as two points just five minutes into the second half, but the Pride responded and began to pull away.

 

GC finished 19-of-65 (29%) from the field, 4-of-15 (27%) from behind the arc and 17-of-23 (74%) from the free throw line. Dione Eccles led Greensboro with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Duncan finished with 19 points and 15 boards.

 

CNU was 16-of-64 (25%) from the floor, its worst shooting percentage of the year. The Captains finished 2-of-16 (13%) from behind the arc and 10-of-14 (71%) from the line.

 

Chelsie Schweers led Christopher Newport with 18 points and nine rebounds. Schweers hit two three-pointers, breaking the school record of 69, set by Kinsey Pritchett in the early 1990's. Schweers now has 70 three's on the year. Rollins finished with 10 points and 18 rebounds.

 

The Pride improve to 17-7 overall and 14-3 in the USA South. CNU falls to 18-6 on the year and 13-4 in conference play. Christopher Newport concludes the regular season Saturday when they travel to Methodist with tip-off set for 2 pm.
