Mary Baldwin Sneaks Past Women's Basketball, 61-60

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad saw its eight-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night by falling 61-60 to Mary Baldwin in a USA South contest.

 

The loss also snaps the Captains four-game winning streak against the Squirrels.

 

CNU trailed by six with 9:40 to go but scored seven straight to take a one-point lead with 8:16 left. The two teams took turns leading as the lead changed hands five times before the Captains took the lead by three, 60-57, with 3:24 to play.

 

Jessica Carter's lay-up with 3:05 cut the lead to one and Kara Hawkins jumper with 1:27 left put MBC ahead, 61-60. Christopher Newport had three shots on the very next possession to take the lead, but missed on all three attempts. The Squirrels Christie Hamilton took a three-pointer from the left wing, but her shot was off with less than 15 seconds to go.

 

Chelsie Schweers' shot with less than five seconds left in the paint hit off the front of the rim and the Captains Michele Russell got the rebound, but could not put up a shot as time expired.

 

Mary Baldwin led by as many as nine in the second half.

 

For the game, MBC was 22-of-52 (42%) from the field, 7-of-13 (54%) from behind the arc and 10-of-11 (91%) from the free throw line. Carter paced the Squirrels with 19 points. Hamilton added 15 points and six rebounds and Hawkins contributed 13 points and six boards.

 

CNU was just 25-of-65 (39%) from the floor, 2-of-6 (33%) from long range and 8-of-11 (73%) from the charity stripe. Schweers led all scorers with 20 points. Colandra Rollins finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Jessica Moore added 16 points and eight boards.

 

MBC improves to 9-13 overall and 6-10 in the USA South. The Captains are now 18-5 on the year and 13-3 in conference action. CNU hits the road Friday to take on Greensboro with tip set for 5:30 pm.
