Women's Basketball Rolls Past Averett, 76-46, On Senior Day

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team won its eighth straight game Sunday afternoon by defeating Averett, 76-46, on Senior Day at the Freeman Center.

 

Seniors Michele Russell, Jessica Carmon and Colandra Rollins were honored before the start of the game.

 

The Captains led by just eight at halftime, 32-24. CNU opened it up in the second half, leading by 30 many times, including the final margin.

 

For CNU, it avenged an earlier season loss where the Cougars won, 63-55, at the Grant Center in Danville, VA.

 

AU was limited to just 17-of-56 (30%) shooting from the field, 4-of-15 (25%) from behind the arc and 8-of-16 (50%) from the free throw line. Sabrina Allen paced Averett with 15 points. Gretchen Sheperty added seven points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

 

Christopher Newport shot 26-of-53 (49%) from the floor, 5-of-10 (50%) from long range and 19-of-27 (70%) from the charity stripe.

 

Russell led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. She also dished out five assists. Chelsie Schweers added 19 points and six assists, Rollins had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Jessica Moore finished with 12 points and seven boards.

 

The Cougars fall to 9-15 on the year and 7-10 in conference play. The Captains are now 18-4 overall and 13-2 in the USA South. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host Mary Baldwin in the final regular season home contest. Tip-off is 7 pm.
