Men's Basketball Holds Off Ferrum, 71-64

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad overcame some poor shooting and held off a pesky Ferrum squad for a 71-64 win Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

It was a lackluster first half for both squads as the score was 27-27 at the break.

In the second half, Theo Baker's three-pointer with 16:32 put the Captains ahead for good. CNU would go on a 14-4 run to take its largest lead, 11 points, with 13:18 left.

The Panthers trimmed the lead down to four with 10:24 left in the game before CNU would answer and extend its lead back to 11 with 9:08 to play.

Ferrum would trim the lead to one with 2:19 left before some solid CNU defense and the Captains hitting their free throws sealed the game.

FC finished 24-of-56 (43%) from the field, 3-of-11 (27%) from long range and 13-of-17 (77%) from the line. Derek Mitchell led the Panthers with 21 points and a game-high 21 rebounds. Jerrell Wade added 17 points and Jon Godsey had 14.

Christopher Newport was 28-of-71 (39%) from the floor, 3-of-17 (18%) from behind the arc and 12-of-18 (67%) from the line. Whinnett paced CNU with a career-high 25 points to go along with eight rebounds. Baker finished with 12 and Conley Taylor had 10.

Ferrum falls to 12-11 on the year and 6-4 in the USA South. The Captains improve to 8-14 overall and 4-5 in the conference. Christopher Newport returns to action Sunday as they host Averett on Senior Day with tip set for 4 pm.
