RALEIGH, NC – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad completed the Raleigh sweep with a 91-79 win over Meredith Sunday afternoon.
Meredith quickly sprinted out to a 16-4 lead just six minutes into the start of the game. The Captains, however, rallied and went on a 22-9 run to take a one point lead with 7:31 left in the half on Michele Russell's lay-up.
The Angels stayed close and trailed by two, 40-38, at the break.
MC came out and scored the first four points of the second half and began the half on a 12-3 run to take a seven-point lead, 50-43, with 17:40 remaining in the game.
CNU answered with a 9-0 run of its own to re-gain the lead, 52-50, with 15:48 left. The Angels again answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points to lead by four. With the score tied at 68 with just over eight minutes to go, Chelsie Schweers drained a three-pointer to put Christopher Newport ahead for good.
Meredith finished the game 37-of-50 (53%) from the field, 4-of-14 (29%) from behind the arc but attempted just thee free throws, making one. Nicole Hall paced MC with 22 points and 10 assists. Brittany Cornelius added 21 points and eight boards and Whitley Turner added 20.
The Captains were 33-of-67 (49%) from the floor, 7-of-15 (47%) from long range and 18-of-23 (78%) from the charity stripe. Jessica Moore paced CNU with 23 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Schweers also scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds and Colandra Rollins added 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. She's now six points away from 1,000 for her career.
Meredith falls to 5-14 on the year and 1-11 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 15-4 on the year and is now tied atop the USA South standings with a record of 10-2.
CNU returns home Tuesday to take on NC Wesleyan on “Think Pink Night” with tip time set for 5:30 pm.
