NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad defeated No. 18 Washington & Lee for the first time in school history, 6-3, Sunday afternoon at Centre Court.
Not only was it the first victory for the men's tennis program over Washington & Lee, who had won the previous eight meetings, including last year's 9-0 win in Lexington, but it was also the first win for the program over a top 20 team.
The Captains win was arguably one of the biggest wins in program history as they took all three doubles matches. CNU is currently ranked 11th in the Atlantic-South Region while the Generals are the region's fifth-ranked squad.
In doubles action, the Atlantic South Region's No. 5 squad of John Mook and Eddie Glidewell (CNU) defeated Tim Ross and Nat Eastes 8-5 at No. 1; Dusty Nelson and Lorenzo Sison (CNU) defeated Jamie McCardell and Morgan Hopson 8-3 and Jacob and John Braig (CNU) defeated Seth Feibelman and Nelson Bunn 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles play, Ross defeated No. 17 Glidewell (CNU) 6-3, 6-1; Estes defeated Jacob Braig (CNU) 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2; No. 12 Mook (CNU) defeated Feibelman 6-3, 6-4; McCardell defeaed Sison (CNU) 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4; Ricky Connor (CNU) defeated Hopson 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-4; and Nelson (CNU) defeated Bunn 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 6.
W&L falls to 0-1 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 1-1 in 2008. CNU returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Salisbury, MD for a neutral site match against New York University at 1 pm.
