Women's Basketball Upends Piedmont, 68-42

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad won its fourth straight Friday night, dropping Piedmont, 68-42, at the Freeman Center.
 
The Captains came right out of the gate, scoring 14 of the game's first 16 points. The Lions countered by going on a 21-10 run to cut the CNU lead to one, 24-23, with 2:35 left in the opening half. Christopher Newport closed the half on an 8-3 run to lead by six, 32-26, at the half.
 
In the second stanza, the Captains took control, quickly increasing their lead to 15, 47-32, a run of 15-8, with 12:13 left.
 
CNU led by 20 points or more, late in the half. The largest lead came with 4:04 left when the Captains led 66-38 on Jessica Moore's lay-up.
 
Christopher Newport limited Piedmont to 16-of-57 (28%) shooting from the field, 1-of-16 (6%) from behind the arc, and 9-of-13 (69%) from the free throw line. Lisa Jennings paced the Lions with 10 points and four rebounds. Beth Adcock added nine points and seven boards.
 
The Captains finished the game 23-of-62 (37%) from the floor, 1-of-3 (33%) from long range and 21-of-28 (75%) from the charity stripe. Chelsea Schweers led CNU with her first double-double, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four steals.
 
Alysa Kerr also finished in double figures, scoring 14 on the night. Kerr also had six rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals.
 
Piedmont falls to 1-6 while CNU is now 4-0. The Captains have the next days off for final exams. Christopher Newport hits the road Monday, December 15, as they travel to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with tip-off set for 6 pm.
