Second Half Surge Lifts Men's Basketball To 96-86 Win Over SUNY-Old Westbury

PHOENIX, AZ. – Thomas Whinnett and Theo Baker combined to go 9-of-11 on three-pointers in the second half and lifted Christopher Newport to a 96-86 win over SUNY-Old Westbury in the final game of the Cactus Jam at South Mountain Community College Tuesday.

 

Baker finished with a career-high 27 points, including 19 in the second half, while Whinnett, who did not score in the first half, also scored 19 in the half.

 

Tied at 43 at halftime, the Captains slipped behind by nine, 61-52, with 13:56 remaining, but then went on a 25-7 run to gain a nine-point lead, 77-68, at the 9:24 mark. Whinnett made two three-pointers to start the run and then Baker made three in a row and capped the run with his fourth three in just over four minutes.

 

Mark Blasingame added 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Mike Green had 12 points and seven rebounds. Davon Barton, who had no points, three assists and five turnovers in the first half pulled a complete reversal in the second half with eight points, nine assists and only one turnover.

 

Old Westbury was led by 6-10 Lester Prosper with 33 points and Hakiem George added 21.

 

The Captains shot 37-68 from the floor and 14-28 on three-pointers despite going 5-16 in the first half. CNU also out-rebounded the Panthers, 44-36.

 

CNU, now 5-5, hosts Maryland Bible Saturday in the first round of the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center at 7:30. Unbeaten Millikin takes on York (N.Y.) in the opener at 5:00. The winners meet Sunday at 4 p.m.
