Men's Basketball Rolls To 84-65 Win Over Lynchburg

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad shut down the Hornets of Lynchburg, 84-65, Saturday night at the Freeman Center.
The two teams played an evenly matched first half, with CNU leading, 41-34 going into the locker room at the break.
The Captains trailed 2-0 and Davon Barton's three-pointer on the second possession of the game put Christopher Newport ahead to stay.
CNU led by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Hornets whittled the lead down to as few as three, 33-30, with 3:11 to play. The Captains scored eight of the final 12 points to lead by seven at the break.
Christopher Newport came out and dominated most of the second half, out-scoring the Hornets, 16-5, over the first five and a half minutes to lead 57-41 with 14:29 to play.
The Captains maintained their double-digit lead throughout the half, leading by as many as 21 late in the contest.
LC shot 25-of-59 (42%) from the field, 6-of-20 (30%) from behind the arc and 9-of-12 (75%) from the line. The Hornets were led by Mason Wooldridge's 19 points and seven rebounds. KC Mendez finished with 15 off the bench and Steven Echols added 14 points.
CNU finished 33-of-57 (58%) from the floor, 11-of-18 (61%) from long range and 7-of-11 (64%) from the charity stripe. Thomas Whinnett led the way with 19 points and five assists. Mark Blasingame totaled 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Theo Baker had 16 as well, Davon Barton finished with 12 points and six assists while Michael Green added 10 points and eight boards.
Lynchburg falls to 1-7 on the year while the Captains improve to 4-3. CNU returns to action Saturday, December 27, when they take on Lewis & Clark in the Cactus Jam Tournament in Phoenix, AZ.
