Women's Basketball Rolls Past St. Marys, 78-59

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad rolled to a 78-59 win over St. Mary's (MD) Tuesday evening at the Freeman Center.
 
The Seahawks jumped out to an early eight point lead, scoring 10 of the game's first 12 points to lead 10-2 with 15:48 left in the first. CNU responded by going on a 10-2 run of its own to tie the score at 12-all with 11:35 to go in the opening stanza.
 
The Captains took the lead 17-14 on Kimmy Hopkins three-pointer with 10:32 left in the first, and never looked back. Christopher Newport led at the break, 41-28.
 
CNU extended its lead to 21 with 14:52 left in the game and led by as many as 29 with 7:24 to go in the game.
 
The Captains defense stifled St. Mary's, limiting them to 38% shooting from the field and 22% from behind the arc while forcing 19 Seahawk turnovers.
 
Christopher Newport shot 32-of-60 (53%) from the field, 5-of-9 (56%) from long range and 9-of-16 (56%) from the free throw line for the game.
 
Allie Scott led St. Mary's with 16 points and five rebounds. Megan Seeman finished with 10.
 
Chelsie Schweers paced the Captains with 18 points and six assists. Kimmy Hopkins added 16 while Alysa Kerr finished with 15 points and six assists.
 
The Seahawks fall to 1-4 on the year and Christopher Newport improves to 2-0. The Captains return to action next Wednesday when they host Trinity (D.C.) at 7 pm.
