POMONA, NJ – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad shutout 15th-ranked Richard Stockton Saturday evening, 3-0, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first half and the Captains came out and scored twice in less than three minutes.
Tyler Clare scored the final two insurance goals, the first of which came in the 67
th minute and the final tally coming in the 80
th minute of action. Lybert assisted on both of Clare's goals.
CNU out-shot the Ospreys, 11-8.
Justin Wolfe recorded his first collegiate shutout in his second collegiate start, stopping three shots.
The Captains advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the squad's run to the Elite 8 in 2000, where they lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Richard Stockton finishes the year 16-6-1. CNU improves to 16-4-3. Christopher Newport will play the winner of Emory and NC Wesleyan next Friday or Saturday at a site to be determined. Check the CNU Athletics website Sunday or Monday for more details.
