POMONA, NJ – Christopher Newport's men's soccer team took down the Rangers of Drew University on Friday night by a final score of 3-1.
With the win, the Captains advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
CNU freshman
Winston Mattheisen opened the scoring for CNU off a corner kick in the 27
th minute. The score would remain at 1-0 heading into the half
The Captains would add to their scoring total in the second half with a pair of goals.
Brock Hughes turned in
Brian Lybert's assist in the 55
th minute for and in the 75
th minute
Jimmy Hash added CNU's third and final goal.
Jim Rossi got the Ranger on the board in the 84th minute, but that would not nearly be enough as the Captains held on for a comfortable 3-1 victory.
With the win the Captains improve to 15-4-3 on the year and will advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Their next game is Saturday at 6:00 pm against Richard Stockton.
