#17 Field Hockey Stuns Johns Hopkins, Advances To Second Round

BALTIMORE, MD – Christopher Newport's field hockey, ranked 17th in the nation, pulled off an NCAA first round upset Wednesday evening by defeating 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University by a final score of 2-1.
In the 29th minute, sophomore Katelyn Yandle set up senior Haylie Black with a pass across the circle, allowing Black to knock the ball into the back of the cage, putting CNU up 1-0.
 
Less then two minutes later CNU would be back for more as Black tacked on another goal.  This time it was on a pass from Anne Gehring that crossed right over the mouth of the goal.
 
Entering the final minute of the game, the Blue Jays were able to get on the board with a goal from Leah Horton, slicing CNU's lead in half. 
 
Emma Stout posted 69 minutes of shut-out goal-keeping, and then gave up Horton's goal off of a penalty corner.  Stout totaled seven saves for the contest.
 
With the win, the Captains improve to 14-5 on the year and will take on The College of New Jersey in the second round this Saturday, November 15th.  The game will be played in Medford, MA on the campus of Tufts University at 2pm.
