Men's Soccer Ties NC Wesleyan, Captures USA South Regular Season Title

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad played to a 3-3 double overtime tie at NC Wesleyan Saturday and in the process, captured the USA South regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's USA South Tournament.
 
It's the fifth time in program history CNU has won the USA South regular season title and the first time since 2006.
 
The Captains scored the first two goals of the game. Jimmy Hash put CNU on the board first in the eighth minute on a cross from Kevin Greenberg that Hash headed into the back of the net.
 
Winston Mattheisen beat a Bishop defender 1-on-1 in the 10th minute to put the Captains ahead 2-0.
 
NC Wesleyan responded with two goals in the 23rd and 30th minutes to knot the score at 2-2.
 
Christopher Newport took a 3-2 lead into halftime on Casey Glancy's goal in the 39th minute off a corner kick from Brian Tweed.
 
The Bishops tied the score in the 59th minute, where the game remained that way through regulation and two overtime periods.
 
CNU out-shot NC Wesleyan, 18-16. Matt Tengs had two saves in goal.
 
The Bishops are now 13-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. The Captains are now 13-3-3 on the year and 5-0-1 in the USA South. With CNU's women hosting it's tournament this year, NC Wesleyan will be the site of the men's tournament.
 
The Captains will meet the winner of No. 4 Greensboro vs. No. 5 Shenandoah at 2:30 pm Friday.
