NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
CNU and VWC played a well-fought battle for the majority of the game with neither team able to get the ball past the opposing goalies.
Heading into the half, the two teams had only combined for five shots; three for the Captains and two for the Marlins.
The difference-maker would come in the second half where Virginia Wesleyan out-shot CNU 5-0, keeping the ball in Captains' territory for the better part of the period.
In the 84th minute, while trying to clear out a Marlins offensive attack, CNU scored an own goal, putting VWC up 1-0. The Captains attempted a late-game push in the final minutes, but were unable to get a clear shot off against the Marlin defense.
Dineen Sampson had five saves in the contest, and CNU shots were taken by Emily Chesbro, Amanda Peters, and Courtney McKay.
With the loss, the Captains have their 7-game winning streak snapped and fall to 7-5-1 on the season.
CNU is off until next weekend when they hit the road for conference match-ups against Averett and Ferrum.
