Field Hockey Wins Double-OT Thriller

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's field hockey team took down the Hornets of Lynchburg College in a 3-2 double-overtime win on Wednesday afternoon.

The Captains, tied for 20th in the nation, found themselves in an early hole as the Hornets drew first blood, scoring in the 6th minute of the game.

CNU would even the score at one goal a piece in the 32nd minute as Kylie Cale set up Kim Tomlin to score with less than 5 minutes to go in the half.

Then in the 50th minute, CNU senior Ashley Cybulski would score on a pass from Haylie Black, putting the Captains up 2-1 with 20 minutes to go.

The Hornets would knot the score at two in the 58th minute, and the score would remain tied for the rest of regulation.

In the first overtime the Hornets threatened as they earned a penalty stroke.  CNU goalie Emma Stout made an incredible save, keeping the score tied.

With less than 10 minutes to go in the second overtime, Black used her second assist to set up Stephanie Bair, who scored the game winner for the Captains.

Stout played all four periods for CNU and made four saves.

The Captains improve to 9-3 on the season and will head to Lexington, VA on Saturday to take on Kenyon at 1 pm. University
