Football Wins Fifth In a Row With 38-14 Victory Over Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Captains of Christopher Newport won their fifth straight game Saturday afternoon, beating the Monarchs of Methodist, 38-14. The USA South football game was played at POMOCO Stadium in Newport News.

CNU was led by junior running back Tunde Ogun, who set a new school mark for rushing yards in a game. Ogun carried the ball 27 times for 254 yards and scored three times. He has now scored nine touchdowns in his last three games.

"Tunde is running real well, and he's getting great blocks from the offensive line," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "He's really seeing the field in front of him and when he runs like that, there's no need to pass the ball."

CNU passed just 12 times in the game, with four completions for 52 yards. The Captains ended up with 351 rushing yards.

Christopher Newport also got a rushing score from freshman Corey Legister, and a 69-yard fumble return from Ryan Wever. Senior kicker Jay Graham booted a 35-yard field goal to complete the Captains scoring.

CNU never trailed in the game. After a scoreless first quarter, the Captains scored twice in the second quarter to lead at the half, 14-0. CNU added to the lead in the second half and led after three quarters,
24-7.

A crowd of 2,469 watched the Captains improve to 5-1 on the year and
4-0 in the USA South. Christopher Newport is now tied with Ferrum at 4-0 atop the conference standings.

Methodist has now dropped six straight, and falls to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the USA South.

Christopher Newport plays next Saturday at North Carolina Wesleyan. The
1 pm start in Rocky Mount will be the final road game of the regular season for the Captains.
