Mens Soccer Upends Greensboro, 3-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's soccer squad

 

The Captains struck first in the 26th minute when Greensboro failed to clear a ball and Clif Kipper corralled the loose ball and drove it home inside the right post from about 20 yards out.

 

The Pride's Quinton Hurdle knotted the score at 1 in the 40th minute when Hurdle picked up a loose ball that came out of CNU's keeper, Matt Tengs, hands and had a wide open net.

 

CNU scored twice in the second half. Chris Thome's diving header off the foot of Andrew Carver proved to be the game-winner in the 74th minute. Jimmy Majewski scored an insurance goal in the 84th minute with Winston Mattheisen assisting.

 

The Captains out-shot the Pride, 10-4. Tengs had two saves in goal.

 

GC falls to 9-5-1 overall and 3-1 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 12-3-1 on the year and 5-0 in conference play.

 

The Captains return to action Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they travel to St. Mary's with start time set for 3 pm.
