Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's field hockey team, tied for 20th in the nation, let a two-goal lead slip away as No. 5 Ursinus came from behind to win 4-3 in double overtime Monday.
The Captains got on the board first in the 20th minute when Taylor Harrell punched a loose ball home. The Bears dominated the first half, finishing with 18 penalty corners to CNU's none. Ursinus also out-shot the Captains, 12-2, in the opening stanza.
The two teams combined for five goals in the second half. Ursinus tied the game in the 45th minute but Haylie Black drove one home with Harrell assisting just 54 seconds later to put Christopher Newport up, 2-1.
Anne Gehring put CNU ahead 3-1 in the 51st minute on the weak side with Lauren Cherry assisting.
The Bears scored just over a minute later to cut the lead to one and tied the score with just over two minutes remaining in the second half.
The two teams played to a scoreless first overtime, but the Bears scored the game winner just 1:19 into the second overtime for the win.
Ursinus out-shot the Captains, 19-8. Emma Stout had 13 saves in the cage. The Bears finished 30 penalty corners to CNU's five.
UC improves to 9-2 on the year as the Captains fall to 10-4. CNU hits the road Sunday as they head to St. Mary's with start time set for 3 pm.
