SALEM, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team completed its non-conference slate Wednesday evening with a 75-60 win at Roanoke.
Roanoke took an early 4-2 lead, but the Captains tied the score at four and took the lead for good with 16:21 to play in the first on Michele Russell's lay-up.
CNU led by as many as 15 in the opening stanza, including at halftime, when they lead, 39-24.
Christopher Newport held the Maroons to just 29% shooting from the floor while the Captains hit over 50% from the field, 17-of-32, in the first stanza.
CNU maintained a double-digit lead all throughout the second half. The Captains lead by as many as 22, 70-48, with 3:42 left on Colanda Rollins stick-back.
For the game, Roanoke shot 23-of-52 (37%) from the field, 5-of-14 (36%) from behind the arc and 9-of-12 (75%) from the line. RC was led by Sara Keller's 10 points. Erin Hansen added six points and 10 boards.
The Captains were 32-of-59 (54%) from the floor, 3-of-8 (38%) from behind the arc and 8-of-12 (67%) from the stripe. Chelsie Schweers paced CNU with 28 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field. She also grabbed six boards. Rollins added 21 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. Russell had 10 in the win.
The Maroons fall to 4-6 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 6-2. CNU returns to action Sunday when they travel to Mary Baldwin with tip-off set for 2 pm.
