NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad scored the first 14 points of the game to defeat Meredith in the Captains USA South opener, 81-67, Sunday afternoon.
This is the first season Meredith has competed as a member of the USA South.
CNU opened the game on a 20-4 run over the first seven minutes of the half. The Angels hit stride and went on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to six, 24-18, with 9:34 to go in the opening half. Christopher Newport would take a 10-point lead, 42-32, into the locker room at the half.
The Captains led by as many as 23 points in the second half, on two separate occasions. The final time came with 6:04 to go when Christopher Newport led, 78-55. The closest Meredith would get would be 15 points with 2:54 left in the game.
For the game, the Angels were 24-of-64 (38%) from the field, 3-of-19 (16%) from behind the arc and 16-of-19 (84%) from the free throw line. Brittany Cornelius led all scorers with 31 points. She was 11-of-22 from the floor, including two three-pointers, and she was also 7-of-8 from the line. Nicole Hall contributed 17 points and nine assists.
CNU was 33-of-63 (52%) from the floor, 2-of-7 (29%) from long range and 16-of-23 (70%) from the charity stripe. Jessica Moore led Christopher Newport with 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Colandra Rollins added 24 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Chelsie Schweers finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The Angels fall to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the USA South. The Captains improve to 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference action. Christopher Newport returns to the court Wednesday when they travel to Roanoke for the final non-conference game of the year. Tip-off is 5:30 pm.
