NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team lost to No. 5 Mary Washington, 67-52, Friday evening at the Freeman Center.
Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the game. It wasn't until the Eagles Kaitie Clarkin drained a three-pointer with 6:34 left in the opening half that either team hit double figures. UMW, at that point, led 12-9.
From there, Mary Washington took control, extending its lead to as many as 13, 26-13, with 1:57 left in the half.
The Eagles took a 26-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, CNU quickly cut the lead to five, 29-24, with 17:17 to go but the Eagles responded with a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 13, 39-26, with 15:02 to go.
Christopher Newport responded by cutting the lead back to five again about mid-way through the half, but that would be as close as they would come, as the Eagles pulled away late.
For the game, UMW was 22-of-63 (35%) from the field, 4-of-15 (27%) from behind the arc and 19-of-27 (70%) from the charity stripe. Liz Hickey paced the Eagles with 15 points and nine blocks. Amanda Bates finished with 12 and Katy Larson added 10 off the bench.
CNU was just 18-of-59 (31%) from the floor, 2-of-12 (17%) from long range and 14-of-19 (74%) from the stripe. Colandra Rollins finished with nine points and 13 rebounds. Jessica Moore had nine points and six rebounds.
Mary Washington improves to 9-1 on the year while Christopher Newport falls to 4-2. CNU returns to action Sunday when they begin conference play by hosting Meredith with tip set for 2 pm.
