Ferrum Outlasts Womens Basketball, 69-54

FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad saw its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon with a 69-54 loss at Ferrum.

 

The Captains led for the majority of the first half, by as many as six, until the Panthers made a late run to take a 35-32 lead. FC went on a 14-6 run over the final six-plus minutes to take the three-point lead into the locker room at the break.

 

CNU shot very well in the first half, despite trailing by three. The Captains shot 58% from the field, compared to the Panthers 43%. CNU committed 13 first half turnovers and Ferrum nailed four of its eight three-point attempts.

 

In the second half, Christopher Newport's only lead came very early when Jessica Moore drained a three-pointer with 17:44 to put her team up, 39-37. Ferrum promptly tied the score and took the lead for good with 14:23 left to go on Shawnese Parker's three.

 

FC finished 24-of-53 (45%) from the field, 6-of-14 (43%) from behind the arc and 15-of-19 (79%) from the line. Ali Davenport and Brittney Bullock led the Panthers with 13 points each. Miranda Carrasco added 10.

 

The Captains were 24-of-58 (41%) from the floor, 3-of-9 (33%) from long range and just 3-of-6 from the line. Chelsie Schweers paced CNU with 20 points. Colandra Rollins added 12 points and five rebounds while Moore finished with 10 points and eight boards.

 

Ferrum improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. Christopher Newport falls to 10-3 on the year and 5-1 in conference action. CNU returns to action Sunday when they head to Averett with tip set for 2 pm.
