Womens Basketball Rolls To Fifth Straight Win, Downs Peace, 87-55

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad won its fifth straight game by defeating Peace, 87-55, at the Freeman Center Saturday afternoon.

 

The Captains led wire-to-wire and out-rebounded the Pacers, 65-36, for the game.

 

CNU led at the break, 45-21. The Captains were 16-of-38 (42%) from the floor in the opening stanza and finished 12-of-17 (71%) from the free throw line. Christopher Newport limited Peace to just 8-of-37 (22%) shooting from the field, 0-of-3 from behind the arc and 5-of-8 (63%) from the charity stripe.

 

In second half, the Captains defense remained strong, holding Peace to just 39% shooting from the floor, 25% from long range and just 38% from the line. CNU picked up its shooting, finishing 58% from the field.

 

For the game, Peace was 23-of-76 (30%) shooting, 1-of-7 (14%) from behind the arc and 8-of-16 from the line.

 

Emily Deal led the Pacers with 11 points off the bench.

 

Christopher Newport finished 34-of-69 (49%) from the floor, 1-of-4 from behind the arc and 18-of-26 (69%) from the free throw line.

 

Colandra Rollins led all scorers with 23 points and she also grabbed 10 rebounds. Kelly White finished with 14 points, a career-high 20 rebounds and seven blocks. Jessica Moore added 14 points and six boards while Chelsie Schweers added 13 points. Michele Russell had nine points and eight assists.

 

Peace falls to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference. CNU is now 9-2 on the year and 4-0 in the USA South. The Captains return to action Tuesday when they travel to NC Wesleyan with tip-off at 5:30 pm.
