Women's Basketball Comes From Behind To Defeat Shenandoah, 63-54

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team came from behind to defeat Shenandoah, 63-54, in USA South play Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

 

It was a very slow first half, offensively, as the two teams combined for 41 points. Shenandoah lead 24-17 at the break. The Hornets led 16-12 with 7:16 to go in the first half, both teams were scoreless until Colandra Rollins made one of two free throws with 3:43 left. SU led by as many as nine, with 1:29 left. Kelly White's lay-up with 41 seconds left cut the lead to seven.

 

In the second half, Christopher Newport went on an 18-4 run to start the half to take the lead, 35-30, with 14:06 to go, a lead they would never relinquish. The Captains lead by as many as 15, 59-44, with 3:58 to go in the game on Chelsie Schweers' lay-up.

 

The Hornets cut into the lead several times, but could not come any closer than five points. Each time Shenandoah cut into the lead, CNU responded.

 

For the game, SU finished 20-of-52 (39%) from the field, 0-of-7 from behind the arc and 14-of-18 (78%) from the free throw line. Alexis Hargbol paced the Hornets with 21 points. Katherine Flint added 11.

 

CNU, after shooting just 26% in the first half, came back and shot 57% in the second half and 42% (24-of-57) for the game. The Captains were 4-of-11 (36%) from long range and 11-of-20 (55%) from the charity stripe.

 

Schweers led Christopher Newport with 26 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Colandra Rollins finished with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Kelly White came off the bench to score 14 points, grab seven boards and swat three shots.

 

Shenandoah falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the USA South. CNU improves to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action. The Captains return to the hard-court Saturday when they host Peace at 2 pm.
