Women's Basketball Holds Off Mary Baldwin, 70-66

STAUNTON, VA – Christopher Newport's women's basketball team won its third in a row by holding off Mary Baldwin, 70-66, in USA South play Sunday afternoon.

 

The Captains led by two at the break, 28-26. CNU was just 10-of-29 (35%) from the floor, including 4-of-7 (57%) from behind the arc and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. The Squirrels were just 10-of-31 (32%) from the field, 2-of-7 (29%) from long range and 4-of-4 from the line.

 

In the second half, CNU picked up its shooting, finishing 14-of-24 (58%) from the field. Christopher Newport also hit 13-of-15 (87%) from the charity stripe. Mary Baldwin shot just 37% from the floor and hit 10-of-14 (71%) from the free throw line.

 

For the game, Mary Baldwin finished 24-of-69 (35%) from the field, 4-of-12 (33%) from long range and 14-of-18 (78%) from the line.

 

The Squirrels were led by Jessica Carter's 30 points on 11-of-33 shooting. Kara Hawkins added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Christie Hamilton finished with 10.

 

Christopher Newport was 24-of-53 (45%) from the floor, 5-of-9 (57%) from behind the arc and 17-of-20 (85%) from the charity stripe.

 

Chelsie Schweers paced CNU with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including hitting four of six three-pointers. Colandra Rollins added 16 points and nine rebounds and Jessica Moore finished with 15 points and nine boards.

 

Mary Baldwin falls to 4-7 on the year and 1-4 in the USA South. CNU is now 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. CNU returns to action Tuesday as they host Shenandoah with tip set for 5:30 pm.
