BELTON, TX - Christopher Newport's football team made its longest road trip in program history and came away with a 51-19 loss to fourth-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday night.
The Captains scored first with 1:58 left in the first quarter when Todd Faison hit Jesse Bradshaw for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Jay Graham's PAT gave CNU a 7-0 lead.
From there, it was all Mary Hardin Baylor. The Crusaders put up 30 points in the second quarter to lead 30-7 at the break.
UMHB also scored the first 21 points in the third stanza to lead 51-7 with 6:53 remaining. Mike Thomas' 1-yard plunge with 2:50 left in the third cut the lead to 51-13. CNU went for a two-point conversion and the pass attempt failed.
The final score of the game late in the fourth when Alex Brown hit T.J. Foster for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:33 to go in the game. The Captains again went for two and the attempt failed.
Quincy Daniels paced the Crusader rushing attack with 158 yards on 10 carries and two scores. James Thrasher finished with 15 carries for 113 yards.
Josh Welch was 5-of-10 passing with two touchdowns and one interception for 65 yards.
Tunde Ogun led Christopher Newport with 10 carries for 51 yards. Faison finished just 3-of-15 for 63 yards and two interceptions. Brown was 9-of-15 in relief for 148 yards.
The Captains fall to 1-1 on the year and return to action next Saturday as they host Salisbury in the final conference game of the year. Kick-off is set for 1 pm.
