Football Shuts Out Shenandoah, 42-0

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's football team snapped a two-game losing streak and opened USA South play on the right foot by shutting out Shenandoah 42-0 Saturday afternoon at POMOCO Stadium.

The Captains totaled 567 yards of total offense, the highest output of the season. CNU rushed for 353 yards and added another 214 yards through the air.

Christopher Newport struck first when Mike Thomas scored from 4 yards out with 9:42 left in the first quarter. The Captains would tack on another seven points in the opening stanza on Evan Taylor's 10-yard scamper with three seconds left. Jay Graham's PAT put CNU up 14-0, which would also be the halftime difference.

The Captains scored two touchdowns in each of the final two quarters. Thomas scored his second of the game, this time on a 1-yard plunge with 10:38 left in the third. With eight seconds to go in the third, Thomas scored his third touchdown of the game, another 4-yarder. Graham's kick put CNU ahead 28-0.

In the final quarter, Ramarcus Baylor set a new school record for the longest rush, scampering 88 yards, capping a drive that began at the CNU's own 1-yard line.

The final touchdown came when Alex Brown sprinted up the middle 11 yards for a touchdown. Chris Frank came on and connected on his first collegiate point-after attempt.

Kevin Roberts led the Hornets with 43 yards rushing on 12 carries. Richard Glick finished 8-of-19 for 96 yards and one interception.

Baylor finished with 100 yards rushing on six attempts. Taylor had 93 yards on 17 attempts.

Todd Faison had his most efficient game of his CNU career, finishing 13-of-14 for 188 yards. Brown was 2-of-3 for 26 yards.

Christopher Newport improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in USA South play. Shenandoah falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

The Captains return to action next Saturday when they head to Greensboro with kick-off set for 7 pm
